FROM THE DESK OF OUR CEO

Every season, this industry shows up. Agencies, partners, and teams across the country do the hard work of making sure communities have what they need when things fall apart. That is not something we take lightly. We started this newsletter to stay connected to that community, share what we are seeing across deployments, and contribute something useful to the conversations already happening in this space. Whether you work with us or not, we want this season to go well for you and the people you serve.

PRE-SEASON READINESS

CSU and NOAA are both signaling a below-normal season driven by El Nino. You already have that data. What it does not change is your activation window, your staffing obligations, or the pressure that hits the moment a storm organizes. A quieter forecast is not a quieter season for the people managing the response.

We just wrapped our pre-season tabletop. We have staffed hurricane shelters, supported EOC operations, and deployed into activations where the plan looked solid until the phones started ringing. What breaks down is rarely about storm intensity. It is the same gaps every season: activation triggers that were never formally documented, rosters that looked credentialed on paper but could not clear in time, and surge agreements negotiated under pressure instead of before June 1. We see it. We plan around it. And we are sharing it because this industry is better when we all show up prepared.

Three things worth confirming before June 1

    • Are your activation triggers documented, agreed upon, and in writing?

    • Is your pre-vetted roster ready to move, or are you still recruiting when the request comes in?

    • If your primary staffing partner goes offline during a regional event, what is your redundancy plan?

Keeping Up with the Krew: Melissa

For Melissa Barnes, nursing began with a simple desire to help people — and encouragement from two diploma nurses who recognized her potential early on. She transitioned directly from the classroom into the emergency department, where the pace, unpredictability, and variety immediately felt like home.
