Keeping Up with the Krew: Melissa Barnes
By: Connor Phillips
For Melissa Barnes, nursing began with a simple desire to help people — and encouragement from two diploma nurses who recognized her potential early on. She transitioned directly from the classroom into the emergency department, where the pace, unpredictability, and variety immediately felt like home.
While the adrenaline of traumas and codes initially drew her to the ER, Melissa’s passion has evolved over time. Today, what she values most is teaching and mentoring newer ER nurses and caring for patients during the most difficult moments of their lives — a responsibility she considers an absolute privilege.
Travel nursing opened the door to perspective and growth. By working in emergency departments across the country, Melissa has learned how subtle regional differences in protocols and practice strengthen adaptability, communication, and clinical confidence. She values the freedom travel nursing offers — the ability to explore new places, connect with new teams, and decide whether to extend an assignment or move on.
During even the most challenging shifts, Melissa stays grounded by remembering that the emergency belongs to the patient — not her — and that her role is to help guide them from crisis toward reassurance and gratitude. Just as importantly, she is intentional about leaving work at work, choosing not to carry the emotional weight home at the end of the day.
Outside of the hospital, Melissa is an avid reader with interests ranging from educational material to biographies and fiction. She enjoys puzzles that challenge her mind and is deeply committed to peer counseling, regularly supporting fellow healthcare professionals after difficult days. She actively seeks opportunities to provide this support on every assignment she takes.
Her advice to nurses considering travel nursing or working in the emergency department is simple but meaningful: explore your surroundings, get to know the people around you, and always strive to be the kind of nurse you’d want to work alongside. Perspective changes everything — and everyone can benefit from a little support.
Melissa also credits her recruiter, Anissa Vargas, as an essential part of her positive travel experience, describing her as prompt, friendly, and endlessly supportive. When she’s ready to hit the road again, Anissa will be her first call.
